Chapter 4
After saying this, to prevent myself from wavering, I opened my laptop right in front of her.
Without the slightest hesitation, just moments before the deadline, I digitally signed the loyalty contract with the powerful southern family. Maddie’s eyes went wide with shock, her hands covering her mouth. “Emma, do you know what you’re doing? This is considered betrayal!”
She’d been urging me to find a way out of Ethan’s control for ages, but even she never imagined I’d go this far.
But when we first started working for the family, Ethan and I had made a blood oath to always remain loyal to the Moretti family, to eventually run the northern territory together after we turned eighteen.
They had his beloved weapons operations there.
So even though I wasn’t particularly fond of the violence of the gun trade, and didn’t have much interest in the brutality of the northern business, throughout three years of service to the family, I’d always considered it my fate.
After years of living under the same roof, Don Moretti and his wife were convinced that Ethan and I would eventually marry, securing my permanent place in the
family.
Everyone, including myself, assumed that Ethan and I would naturally become a power couple after turning eighteen.
But now, I couldn’t find any reason to stay loyal to the Morettis anymore.
Or rather, after today, if I still clung to Ethan like before,
I would lose all respect for myself.
All I wanted now was to get as far away as possible. It didn’t matter where, as long as Ethan wasn’t there.
If he was ruling the north, then I’d go south.
“Maddie, I’ve arranged for you to come with me if you want. The Vasquez family has agreed to take you too.”
Maddie looked terrified but nodded slowly. “When do we leave?”
