They never had Betty clean Elena’s room, always thinking she would be back soon. But a thin layer of dust began to settle on the luggage left behind as the days passed. Still, there was no sign of Elena.
The entire house grew more and more silent–so quiet it was almost frightening. Kane hadn’t smiled in days, and Robin burled himself in work, wishing he could stay at the office 24 hours a day.
That day, the weather changed abruptly, and Kane came down with a high fever. His whole body burned like a furnace. His head was fuzzy and heavy, making him feel absolutely miserable.
Betty panicked and quickly called the family doctor, Nathan Baker. However, Kane’s face was flushed bright red. Despite being ill, he still pouted and complained, “I don’t want the doctor to take care of me.
“I want Elena! Where did she go me to die?”
I’m sick now, and she still won’t come back. Does she want
Maybe it was the fever, but the usual sharpness in his voice was gone–replaced by a fragile sort of sadness.
Betty looked troubled. “We really don’t know where Mrs. Marsh went. Don’t you like Ms. Beck the most, Mr. Kane? Should we call her to take care of you?”
Before Kane could say anything, Betty rushed off to inform Constance, not hearing his faint protest. Soon, Constance appeared at Kane’s bedside, clumsily trying to care for him.
As she tried to help him sit up, her grip slipped. Kane’s body fell sideways, and his head slammed into the edge of the bed. A large bump immediately swelled on his forehead.
Kane’s eyes welled up with tears. He pouted and gave her a push. “You hurt me! I don’t want you to take care of me!”
Constance forced a smile and bit her lip secretly, trying hard to maintain a gentle tone.
“Kaney, I’m sorry. That was my mistake. I promise I’ll take better care of you next time. I won’t let you get hurt again.”
As she spoke, she handed him a piece of candy. “Be a good boy. Eat this, and you won’t feel so bad.”
Kane’s expression softened a little after tasting the sweetness. It took quite some effort to get him to take his medicine without fuss.
Just as he finally lay down to rest, his entire body suddenly broke out in a rash, with red spots spreading rapidly across his skin. His breathing grew more and more labored.
“You bad woman! Did you poison me? I feel awful–ugh–Dr. Baker!
“Dr. Baker! I don’t want her taking care of me!
“Mommy, I miss you so much… Elena, I… I really Kane whimpered in pain,
sobbing and calling desperately for Nathan..
Constance’s face turned pale. Panic set in as she scrambled to get help.
After examining Kane’s condition, Nathan scolded her with a stern expression. “Ms. Beck, what on earth were you thinking? Mr. Kane is allergic to mango! He can’t even touch it, let alone eat mango candy!”
“I didn’t know!” Constance was so flustered her eyes turned red, feeling like the sky was crashing down on her.
She could only pray in her heart over and over that Robin wouldn’t come back too soon–and that he wouldn’t blame her for this.
