Yet, at that very moment, Robin happened to return home. When he saw the chaotic scene before him, his face turned dark as ink.
“What on earth happened here?”
Betty and Nathan began explaining in a rush, one after the other. Constance’s face instantly went pale.
“Constance, don’t come to the house to take care of Kaney from now on. I don’t want him getting hurt again.”
His voice was cold as ice, completely shattering the last bit of hope in Constance’s heart. She had thought that with Elena out of the picture, would finally be easy to step into her place.
How could he treat her like this just because she failed to take care of Kane properly?
Constance bit down hard on her lip, her body swaying unsteadily. Her vision spun, and she immediately collapsed the next second.
Robin quickly caught her and handed her over to Nathan, but he showed no real concern for what might happen to her. Instead, he stayed by his son’s bedside.
“Elena… I want you to take care of me… I miss you…” Kane mumbled weakly in his sleep.
His eyelids were tightly shut, and his eyes were rimmed with red. He looked utterly pitiful.
Robin let out a long, heavy sigh. He held his son and tried to comfort him, but nothing he did seemed to help. At that moment, both of them couldn’t help but wish Elena was still there.
She’d always been the one taking care of Kane. At first, she had no experience, as she was just a young woman who didn’t know much.
However, she had enrolled in classes to learn to care for Kane properly. She learned everything from scratch and gradually became skilled. While she was at home, Kane had barely fallen ill.
No one knew how long Robin spent coaxing him, but eventually, Kane began to calm down. The fever subsided, and he finally drifted into a deep sleep. Just as Robin was about to breathe a sigh of relief, the doctor suddenly walked in with a troubled expression on his face.
“Mr. Marsh, Ms. Beck… she… she’s pregnant with your child. Would you like her to terminate the pregnancy?”
Robin froze in place the moment those words were spoken. How could Constance be pregnant with his child? He had always taken every precaution, every single time.
He even made sure she took birth control afterward. He had never allowed the possibility of her getting pregnant.
Chapter 12
Robin’s gaze turned icy, and he said without a hint of hesitation, “Terminate It. I will only ever have one child in this life, which is Kaney. She’s not Evangeline, so she doesn’t get to carry my child.”
Constance overheard his words just outside the door. Her heart instantly turned cold. She clenched her fists and then stormed off.
When she returned to face Robin again, she was dressed exactly like Evangeline. From the way she walked to the curve of her smile, every movement seemed deliberately crafted to mimic
her.
“Robin, I just got my test results back from the hospital. My body’s weak, so I’m not suited for pregnancy. I might not be able to conceive at all in this lifetime. Maybe Dr. Baker made a mistake earlier?
“I know my body best, and my period came just a few days ago. It must’ve just been a false, alarm–the report says as much too.”
She smiled gently as she spoke. The angle of her lips was so precise that it looked like it had been practiced tens of thousands of times. Robin was suspicious at first, but after reading the test report, he believed her–for now.
Maybe Nathan really had made a mistake?
“Well, even if you’re not pregnant, you must be tired. It’s getting late–just stay here and rest tonight.”
He said it casually, as if it meant nothing to him. Only then did Constance breathe a sigh of relief.
As she turned away, Robin narrowed his sharp eyes, watching her closely. He didn’t believe a word of what she said.
“Dr. Baker, find a way to run another test on Constance. If she really is pregnant, don’t let her keep it.” As he gave the order, all the warmth disappeared from his eyes.
She was just a stand–in. She wasn’t worthy of bearing his child. After receiving the command, Nathan quietly left to carry it out.
