Chapter 23
Kane bit his lip, feeling wronged. “Dad, does Mommy really not want me anymore?”
“She will. If we keep trying to make it right, one day she’ll see how much we mean it,” Robin said, not willing to let his son lose hope–nor let go of his own.
Kane’s mood lifted slightly upon hearing that. He nodded firmly. “I’ll try my best!”
After getting their injuries treated at the hospital the father and son bought a house near Elena’s guesthouse and temporarily settled there
One day, Kane saw Mollie sitting at the doorstep, eating food Elena had made while smiling with joy. Jealousy and bitterness surged in his chest.
Once upon a time, he was the only child Elena ever cared for like that. He was the only one allowed to call her “Mommy“.
But now, Elena had taken everything she used to give him and handed it to Mollie. What made that girl so much more special than him?
At that moment, a guest who had just checked in made a casual remark with a chuckle, “Ms. Larson really is kind and warmhearted. I wonder who she’ll marry someday. Whoever it is, what a lucky guy.”
“And once she has her own children, will she still treat Mollie this well?”
Elena’s expression shifted slightly, but she knew the guest meant no harm. She simply responded with calm emphasis, “I’ve already been married once. I don’t plan on marrying
again.
“Things are good the way they are now. From here on, Mollie will be my only kid. Besides, I’m the lucky one. I’m still blessed even if I never remarry.”
The guest gave an awkward laugh and didn’t press further. But Kane stood stiffly in a shadowed corner nearby, his face frozen. His fingers gripped the doorframe so tightly they turned pale.
Elena didn’t want him anymore. She only wanted Mollie!
A surge of overwhelming rage rose in Kane’s chest. He wanted nothing more than to charge forward and have the bodyguards take Mollie away forever. Every time a child appeared at Elena’s side, he wanted to drive them out.
But Kane did nothing after a long while. He simply shot Mollie a furious glare, then walked
in frustration. He didn’t resort to falsely accusing Mollie like Tie had last time.
away
That was because he understood it wouldn’t work. Elena wouldn’t believe him. She’d only end
hating him even more.
up
Kane finally realized how it felt to explain yourself and have no one belleve a word for the first time. That frustration weighed on him like a stone in his chest. He refused to eat for three
meals straight.
Robin was too busy with work to notice whether his son was eating after arriving in Sutherland, let alone that Kane was on a hunger strike. Betty couldn’t stop him either..
Before long, Kane grew dizzy with hunger. Every step felt like walking on cotton–light, unsteady, and faint. He felt like he might pass out any second.
Still, he gritted his teeth and forced himself to walk toward Elena’s guesthouse. “Mom… Mommy…”
His voice was weak and pitiful, like a newborn kitten crying..
Elena stepped outside with a frown when she heard movement at the door. “What are you doing here? Didn’t I tell you I want you gone?”
Kane froze for a second. Then, he collapsed into a frail act just as quickly, clinging to her pant. leg weakly.
‘Mommy, I don’t want to leave. I can’t bear to be apart from you.
“I still want to eat the food you make. I want to stay with you. I really do see you as my mom. “Everything that happened before was all my fault. I’m sorry!”
He bit down hard, trying to ignore the aching emptiness in his stomach, and dropped to his knees in front of Elena. His body swayed, barely holding on. He fainted completely within
minutes.
Elena’s frown deepened as she looked at him. With no other option, she brought him back into the house.
