CHAPTER 8

I knew it was Chloe calling.

I wondered what she’d told Griffin to make him leave in such a hurry.

I hadn’t planned to investigate, but when I went downstairs to take out the trash, I spotted them through the window of the coffee shop across the street. Inside, Chloe was sobbing as she confronted Griffin: “I ran into Tessa at the bridal shop today. She chose the same dress as me and is getting married on the same day! You never told me, but I know you two grew up together. There’s something between you, isn’t there? Just tell me straight–are you marrying me or her?” Griffin looked heartbroken seeing Chloe cry. He gently pulled her into his arms. Even as she pounded her fists against his chest, he held her close, speaking softly: “Tessa and I grew up together, but her feelings for me are one–sided and bordering on obsessive. You’re the only one I want to marry.”

“I’m sorry, baby. I should have explained everything sooner–that’s my fault,” Griffin said with a troubled expression.

“She has these delusions, convincing herself she’s my fiancée when I never gave her reason to think that. But Chloe, I only love you.”

Griffin’s passionate declaration quickly transformed Chloe’s tears into smiles. Right there in the coffee shop, oblivious to everyone around them, they began kissing deeply.

Witnessing this, I felt a wave of disgust. This man didn’t deserve a minute more of my love.

It had taken twelve years to see him for who he truly was, but better late than

never.

When I got home, I discovered several nasty text messages from Chloe: “Griffin told me EVERYTHING. If I catch you hanging around him again, I’ll make sure the entire company knows what a pathetic stalker you are!”

“You’re so fucking desperate. Don’t you have any self–respect, trying to steal someone else’s man?”

“We’re getting married in days. He’ll NEVER want trash like you. Stop obsessing over him–it’s embarrassing.”

I stared blankly at these messages and set my phone down without responding. When Griffin returned, he anxiously asked, “Did you get any strange messages?” “No.”

Griffin visibly relaxed, then immediately reminded me: “Don’t forget to finish that proposal soon,”

Despite Griffin’s daily reminders about the proposal, I deliberately kept putting it off.

This delay stretched right up to the day before my thirtieth birthday. During my absence from the office, Griffin had hired a temporary assistant.

The new assistant kept making mistakes, and Griffin’s frustrated shouting became a regular feature in the office.

“What the hell are you even good for? Either do your job properly or get out!” The assistant responded tearfully, “Ms. Parker used to handle all of this. I’m still learning the ropes.”

Griffin threw down the files, massaging his temples. “When is Tessa coming back?” “But Ms. Parker has—‘

Before the assistant could mention my resignation, a slender figure in a floral dress burst into Griffin’s office and threw herself into his arms.

“Griffin! Tomorrow’s our wedding day!” Chloe exclaimed excitedly. “I want to do something special–let’s go to the courthouse first thing to make it official before the ceremony. What do you think?”
