Chapter 9
When I was dragged down by Dominic and ran down the mountain, I turned around only to see Benedict buried in a snowdrift with blood constantly pouring out of the corners of his mouth.
Three days later, the search and rescue team found him. His right leg was necrotic and he was disabled for life.
Afterwards, the police investigation showed that Charlotte and Nathaniel had installed a micro–blasting device on the mountain. Even more outrageous was that Charlotte bribed the rescue team in advance to delay the search and
rescue.
We met Benedict in a wheelchair at a private hospital. He was so thin that he had lost his looks. His originally handsome face was sunken. The rouser leg of his right leg was hanging empty.
I asked softly, “Is it worth it?”
He raised his head slowly. His eyes were clearer than ever before.
“It’s worth it to save you.”
At this time, Dominic took off his glasses and carefully wiped the lenses with a silk scarf. “It’s time to settle this trouble of Nathaniel once and for all.”
It turned out that Dominic discovered that the Stuart Family was conducting transnational illegal transactions ten years ago.
In order to gather conclusive evidence, he carefully designed a play to deliberately make Nathaniel think that he had been scrapped. This self–torment trick made Nathaniel let down his, guard and bought Dominic crucial time to investigate.
Three days later, in the middle of the night, Nathaniel was flirting with Charlotte in bed and Dominic broke into the house with his men.
When Nathaniel saw the intact Dominic, his entire face twisted and distorted in anger. “Impossible! I clearly pressed the button myself.”
Dominic sneered and signalled his bodyguard to come forward. “Now, it’s time for you to experience what it feels like to be truly disabled.”
The hand raised and the knife fell. Charlotte, who was on the side, let out a mournful scream and stumbled out of the room. We found her in a dilapidated motel on the outskirts of the city.

She was huddled in a dirty corner, dishevelled and clutching a dirty pillow tightly. Her mouth was full of gibberish.
She said, “Blood, a lot of blood.”
The psychiatrist told us that since she witnessed the scene of Nathaniel’s execution, her spirit has completely collapsed. From time to time, she screamed hysterically. Sometimes she muttered to herself in the air. She had completely failed to recognise anyone.
The day I visited her in the mental hospital, the sun was surprisingly good. She sat quietly by the window, mechanically fiddling with her hair.
Hearing footsteps, she slowly turned her head and suddenly grinned, “Hey, hey, beautiful Charlotte. Charlotte Winifred is so beautiful.”
That smile was innocent like a child, but it made my heart tremble. My dad stood outside the ward. His back was hunched over a lot. He opened his mouth and eventually just shook his head wearily.
Dominic and I chose the cherry blossom season for our wedding. The Roussel Family’s friends and relatives came from all over the world. The large auditorium was packed to the rafters.
As I walked down the red carpet covered in flowers, my afterglow caught a glimpse of a familiar figure in the guest gallery. Benedict sat quietly in his wheelchair. He wore a straight suit. The sunlight cast light and shadow on him through the glass, making him thinner and thinner.
When our eyes met, he looked up. His eyes were full of sadness, but the corners of his mouth raised in a very shallow arc.
When the pastor announced that we were officially married, I saw Benedict in the distance quietly turning his wheelchair to leave the auditorium. The sunlight stretched his shadow very long.
I turned around and threw myself into Dominic’s arms. I smelled the familiar woody scent of his body. This time, I really found my own happiness.
