Jonathan’s tone was impatient.
“I stood quietly at the doorway, keeping myself hidden.
Alicia immediately lifted her head, curious. “Did you two fight again?”
Jonathan didn’t answer her.
Jim frowned, shooting her a displeased look. “Do you care that much about whether they’re fighting?”
“That’s not what I meant.” Alicia quickly lowered her head. “I just think Jonathan is already exhausted, and she’s always quarreling with him
“That’s none of your business.”
Jim’s face went cold as he practically snapped at her. “Mind your own business and stop poking your nose where it doesn’t belong.”
I stayed at the door.
Something felt off. Jim’s feelings for Alicia were definitely different. The situation suddenly got complicated, so I stayed outside, listening closely.
Alicia’s tone grew a little bitter. “Why can’t I care? Jonathan and I grew up together. Mr. Ford Senior treated me like his own. Why shouldn’t I care? I just can’t stand it!”
Jim gave her a cold glance. “Everyone knows what’s really on your mind. Alicia, I can’t convince you, nor can I control you, but you better watch yourself.”
Her face turned pale as she looked at Jonathan with hurt eyes. “Jonathan, look at him! All he does is criticize me!”
He tapped his fingers on the desk, then his eyes flicked beyond the office doorway to where I stood.
I froze, thinking he was about to expose me, but instead, he quickly looked a not to see me. He turned back to Jim. “Say less about her.”
¿, pretending
Jim furrowed his brow, clearly annoyed. “Jonathan, why are you letting her get away with this?
“Am I?” Jonathan’s tone was flat.
Jim’s frown deepened. “You’re spoiling her too much. One day, it’s going to blow up in your face.”
After a pause, he added, “Elise’s in the next room. You should check on her before she starts

making a scene again.”
“She’s fine,” Jonathan said, a hint of irritation creeping into his voice, as if he didn’t want to hear my name. “I’ll go once Alicia’s okay.”
wasn’t sure if he was saying that to me or just out loud. He’d clearly seen me just moments ago, yet he spoke like I wasn’t even there, almost as if he meant to sting me deliberately.
I didn’t care much anymore.
But my head felt woozy, probably from the lack of rest these past few days. The dizziness only got worse after that fight.
I shook my head to clear it when Jim’s voice came through from inside again.
He said to Jonathan, “Elise isn’t herself. You’d better stay with her.”
“What’s wrong with her?” Jonathan’s fingers suddenly stopped tapping as he looked at Jim.
“She’s your wife. You should ask yourself what’s really going on with her,” Jim replied.
“Stop being so cryptic,” Jonathan snapped, growing impatient.
Jim didn’t say another word. He walked over to Alicia and continued bandaging her.
Alicia muttered, “What could possibly be wrong with Elise? She’s done this before, faking suicide attempts just to get Jonathan’s attention.
“Who knows how many times she’s self–harmed? But it’s always all show, no real harm. It’s all just her schemes.”
Jim shot her a cold look.
Alicia lowered her head, clearly a little scared. “I’m not wrong.
