Chapter 1
Okay, so I had this massive crush on Chad, the
school golden boy. Problem? Chad was head-
over–heels for Tiffany, the head cheerleader.
And Tiffany? She was all about Spike, the bad
boy with a motorcycle and a reputation.
And Spike? Get this, Spike was into me.
I know, right? Talk about a love triangle… or, I
guess, a square.
So, Tiffany, in all her infinite popular–girl
wisdom, came up with a solution. “Why don’t
we all just… date each other?” she suggested,
like it was the most normal thing in the world.
Chad, bless his heart, just sighed and said,
“Well, it’s the only way everyone gets what they
want.”
<
And Spike? He just shrugged. “Eh, why not? I’m
game.”
Me? Was I the only sane person left in this
crazy school?

I finally worked up the nerve to confess my
feelings to Chad Thompson.
His ridiculously long fingers took the note I
handed him, a smile crinkling the corners of his
eyes, showing off a little dimple. “Listen, Sarah,
thanks for the… interest. But I think we’re
better off as study buddies, you know?
Academic partners.”
Ugh. Classic Chad. Even his rejections were
annoyingly nice.
He was just…perfect. Too perfect.
<
We were in the same AP Lit class, and I was
always at the top of the heap, with him
breathing down my neck. People even shipped
- us.
But I just liked him, and I thought he didn’t like
- me.
I forced a smile. “So, you… you seeing
anyone?” Maybe, just maybe, there was a
chance.
Then he dropped the bomb. “I’m really into
Tiffany.”
Cue the sound of my heart shattering into a
million tiny pieces.
“Hey, could you keep that on the down–low,
though? Just between us?”
I nodded dumbly. “Y–yeah, sure.”
<
Tiffany Swanson. Head cheerleader, drop–dead
gorgeous, and about as approachable as a
porcupine.
Of course Chad liked Tiffany. They were, like,
genetically engineered to be prom king and
queen.
No wonder Chad took the long way to class,
always passing the stairwell closest to Tiffany’s
class.
No wonder he was the first to pick her up when
she fell on the playground.
Wait a second. I thought Tiffany was obsessed
with Spike.
Everyone knew about Tiffany’s not–so–secret
crush on Spike Miller. Everyone said the ice
queen only showed her soft side to him.
I tried for another smile. “Isn’t Tiffany like.
<
totally chasing after Spike?”
Chad’s face twitched. “You have a way with
words.”
He turned and walked off, leaving me to pick up
the pieces.
He liked someone who didn’t like him.
