Chapter 48
Estelle rested her chin on her hands and looked at Ethan with a hint of mockery in her eyes. What she was about to say would completely set him off.
“Who am I? I’m just the founder of the Stellar Foundation and the sponsor of the lab. Who else could I be?”
“Estelle!”
Ethan clenched his fists. His calm eyes were now tainted with displeasure.
“I know you’re mad at us for what happened back then, but you’re still part of the Sawfords. Without our protection, do you think Dillon would let this go without a fight?”
“Hahahah!” She was amused by his remark. The mockery in her beautiful eyes was overflowing.
She had expected him to be unreasonable, but she didn’t think he’d be this unreasonable. “Hasn’t Dillon always been in cahoots with the Sawfords?” she asked with a smile.
He raised an eyebrow, surprised by her boldness. Judging by how straightforward she was being, he felt she had changed a lot.
Looking at her now, she resembled their mother more than she did before. It wasn’t just in
appearance.
He was dazed for a moment but quickly regained his composure. Then he handed her a
contract.
She glanced at it once before tossing it into the trash can.
Seeing that, he shot up from his seat.
Seth quickly stepped in front of Estelle, eyeing him warily.
“Mr. Sawford, what are you trying to do?”
Ethan shot him a playful yet mocking look and let out a snort.
“Are you sure you want to go against me?”
Estelle sensed his threatening tone, and her heart tightened.
She looked at him cautiously.
“The cancer treatment drug isn’t the only thing Seth is capable of. We have many ongoing research projects, and he’s an expert whom the higher–ups went through a lot of trouble to acquire. Are you sure you want him gone?”
Ethan’s expression suddenly changed. He sat straight, eyes narrowed with unspoken authority.
“Are you threatening me?” he asked.
She gave him a faint smile. That was enough of an answer.
He began to assess her with a fresh look.
After a while, he asked, “Have you thought this through? Is it worth doing this?”
She smiled and nodded.
“I’m truly sorry, but I’d be humiliating myself if collaborated with the likes of you. Besides, I don’t even like seeing you people. Why would I work with you?”
This was the first time she had shown complete hatred for them.
He stood up, his expression stiff.
ז”
gave you your chance.”
Since she didn’t appreciate it, he wouldn’t be held back by their relationship.
“You may leave.”
She remained composed and wasn’t shaken by his words. In fact, she was relieved that she wouldn’t have to see Ethan again.
Ethan saw the expression on her face, and for the first time, he doubted his ability to read someone. She was happy. Wasn’t she supposed to be anxious and beg for forgiveness?
He felt unsettled by how much she had changed, yet found himself curious.
In the end, he didn’t leave. He sat down again.
Seeing that, Estelle grew more cautious.
“Mr. Sawford, is there anything else?”
After some time, he finally asked, “Do you hate the Sawfords?”
She paused for a moment and then laughed at the question.
“Have I not made it clear enough?”
He frowned at her response. He hadn’t expected her to have the guts to say it outright.
“Estelle, we had no choice back then. Your private life was far too scandalous.”
She let out a bitter laugh.
Seth held her hand tightly to give her some support.
“Ethan, she was suffering from late–stage stomach cancer. She was in pain the whole time.

“Do you think she would have been in the mood for some ‘group activities‘?”
Ethan froze when he heard that.
