Seth swiftly pulled Estelle behind him to shield her from Davis‘ unkind words.
He wiped all traces of displeasure off his face and explained politely, “I think you’ve misunderstood us. We’re here to meet Mr. Pembroke regarding the cancer treatment drug. Please inform him that we’re here.”
Davis scoffed and waved his hand impatiently at them. “I’ve never seen the cancer treatment drug that you speak of. Who knows if it’s real? But, sir, you look like a pretty decent man. Why
fall for a woman like her?”
would you
Estelle’s expression darkened when she heard Davis‘ words. She hadn’t intended to make
things difficult for him, but his words were too much. She lifted her head and looked straight at Davis.
“And what kind of a woman am I? Is this the best Mr. Pembroke can do? Spread rumors about a woman at will? Well, consider me enlightened today. And do me a favor, will you? Tell Mr. Pembroke that slandering a woman based solely on a few baseless rumors is hardly the conduct of a gentleman.”
With that, Estelle grabbed Seth’s arm and got him to leave with her.
Seth could tell from the look on her face that she was seething. After putting some distance between them and Davis, Seth tried to soothe her. “Mr. Pembroke’s our only source of herbs now. You should head back first. I’ll wait here a bit longer.”
She looked up at the darkening clouds overhead and said in a disapproving tone, “What are we waiting here for? You told me that since I have a second chance at life, I shouldn’t let others trample all over me. But what about you?”
Seth paused momentarily before a bright smile spread across his face. He had a fiery look in his
eyes, and the joy in them was unconcealed. “Are you worried about me, Estelle?”
Estelle let out an uneasy cough and turned to look away.
Not too far away, Dillon, who’d just hurried over, caught sight of the scene. A frosty look instantly came over him.
Feeling the coldness radiating off Dillon, Zayne cleared his throat. “Are we still going down, Mr. Waverly?”
Dillon lifted his gaze lazily and shot Zayne a glare so sharp that Zayne dared not make a sound.
Dillon had put a pause on signing a contract that was worth tens of millions to get here when he learned that Estelle had come to meet Ronald. But now that he saw her, he wasn’t getting out of the car to meet her. Zayne couldn’t fathom what was going on in Dillon’s head.
Dillon pinned a dark look on Estelle. Then, he furrowed his brow. Had Estelle forgotten that

they hadn’t gotten a divorce yet?
“Head back,” Dillon spat after what seemed like a long while.
Were they going back just like that? Zayne turned around and met Dillon’s terrifyingly dark eyes before quickly whipping back around and prompting the chauffeur to drive off.
But he couldn’t help reminding Dillon, “I’m sure Mr. Pembroke wouldn’t agree to meet Mrs. Waverly. If you go and help her out now, I’m sure she’ll…”
Dillon’s brows were pulled even tighter together. His unspoken rejection shut Zayne up.
At the thought of Estelle being so intimate with Seth, Dillon scoffed. “She’s at fault for being so close to other men. Why should I help her?”
Dillon’s jealousy was clear for all to see. Zayne couldn’t help but let out a sigh. He might not understand what was going on in Dillon’s head, but he sure knew what jealousy was.
Estelle was shocked when she noticed a Rolls–Royce pulling away–that looked like Dillon’s
car.
Seth followed her gaze curiously when he saw her staring at a car and spacing out. “Is that Mr. Pembroke’s car?”
Estelle clenched her fists as bitterness and pain bubbled within her. It looked like Dillon had just spoken ill of her to Ronald.
Realizing there was no chance of meeting Ronald today, she smiled faintly at Seth.
