A few days later, I got a call from HR with an
offer. I was thrilled, and immediately accepted.
Since I was set, might as well have some fun

with them. I walked out of my room and found
my brother comforting Tiffany:
“Don’t worry, Tiff, your interview was way
better than my sis’s. You’ve got way more
class, if they don’t pick you, they must be
blind.”
Such BS! Guys like him always have a line. No
wonder there were always girls showing up at
our door, ready to fight.
He hung up the second he saw me and tried to
avoid eye contact.
I played it cool, giving him a sweet smile. “Hey,
bro, I know you’re still mad about that grocery
store thing. Why don’t I treat you to dinner?
How’s that sound?”
When we were ordering, I made sure my phone
was within easy reach. He grabbed it without a
second thought. “Riley, since you’re paying, I’ll

second thought. “Riley, since you’re paying, I’ll
use your phone to order.”
I nodded, all smiles. I casually went to the
bathroom to wash my hands, grabbed my spare
phone, and sent a text: “Okay, go time.”
I came back to see him practically vibrating
with smugness. I couldn’t help but chuckle. He
was way too confident for his own good.
Before we even had two bites, Tiffany showed
up, all smiles. I knew, she must have found out
by now that my brother got my job offer
canceled.
Jake made a big show of pulling out a chair for
his “girl,” making a big show of it. “Riley, you
don’t mind if Tiffany joins us?”
I just shrugged. “It’s just an extra plate.
Besides, she might be family one day.”

As I was scarfing down my food, Tiffany asked, “Riley, aren’t you worried about the job thing?”
I crammed a massive bite of meat in my mouth
and mumbled, “Worried about what? My
interview went great, I’m set.”
She rolled her eyes, looking at me like I was
some idiot, and then shot a look at Jake, all pity
and disgust. She faked a worried look and said,
“I always try to have a backup plan. You can’t
be too optimistic, you know? What if they don’t
hire you?”
I just nodded, all innocent. “That’s true, the
higher you climb, the further you fall. I guess I
envy you, Tiffany, no matter what happens,
you’ve always got a guy to take care of you.”
Tiffany looked all lovey–dovey at Jake, and he
looked back at her all googly–eyed, like I wasn’t
even there. I was losing my appetite, so I
grabbed a swig of my milkshake.

Then, the mushy moment was broken by
Tiffany’s phone ringing. She glanced at the
caller ID, looked confused, and answered.
A super girly voice whined, “Jake, when are you
coming over? I miss you like crazy!”
