The day of the job started and I was feeling
good, and ready for work. I was walking

towards the office when I spotted Mom and

Dad and my brother, there to see Tiffany to her first day.
Jake glared at me. “Why are you still hanging around? Did you seriously follow us here to try and get the job back?”
Dad waved his hand, “Go home, stop causing trouble. Today is a big day for Tiffany, the start of a great future for our family.”
Mom wrapped her arm around Tiffany. “Don’t let her ruin your first day. We’ll get you some chicken soup after work!”
Tiffany looked down at me with a smug look. “Wow, you’re really pathetic. No one wants you, but you just can’t accept it. I’ve already got the
job, you can’t steal it back by crying about it!
GlobalTech pays well, but not everyone’s lucky
enough to get the opportunity. Some people
just have to deal with a basic job, with a basic
salary. You just need to accept your lot.”
She was talking down to me, looking like she
was so much better than me.
After that little speech, she strutted toward the company reception area with my family
following her. “I’m the new Marketing.
Manager,” she announced. Then she turned
back to me. “And that woman over there? Make
sure she can’t get in. She’ll probably start a
scene.”
The receptionist, who obviously thought she
was the manager, immediately waved over a
security guard. He was waiting at the door,
keeping me from walking in.
“What’s your name, so I can call HR?” she
asked, all sweet and polite.
“Tiffany Hayes.”

“Got it, just one moment.” She called HR,
waited a few minutes, and then said, “I’m so
sorry, Ms. Hayes, we don’t have you on our
list.”
“What?! That can’t be right!” Tiffany said,
slamming her hands on the counter. “I’m
supposed to be your Marketing Manager, you
can’t treat me like this. I’ll have your job!”
The girl looked scared, and my brother jumped
- in. “Maybe they hired so many people, they just
forgot you. Is it possible that your name has
been missed off the list?”
Mom grabbed the receptionist, yelling, “Get
your boss out here now! Your company must
have some serious issues! I’m going to sue
you!”
The receptionist was crying, when the HR
manager who interviewed both Tiffany and I got
out of the elevator.

Seeing all the drama, he screamed “What the
hell is going on here?!”
Tiffany ran toward him. “Mr. Johnson, I’m
Tiffany Hayes, the one you interviewed. I’m
supposed to be starting today.”
He frowned, “We hired someone to fill that
position, it’s not you.”
“That can’t be true, I got the call saying I got the job!”
He clearly had no patience for it. “We’re busy,
Ms. Hayes, we really can’t help you.”
He walked straight toward the door, and shook
my hand. “Riley, we’re so glad to have you
here.”
