Chapter 39.
Courtney POV.
I have formulated a plan in my head. I can’t let Max die before I speak to him. I have to know
the truth, and I think he is the key to the questions that are swirling around in my head. I have
a few hours before dawn and he will die for his treachery.
I have been awake for hours, unable to sleep. Clearly Kaden doesn’t have that issue. He is
snoring softly beside me. Men, I swear to god as soon as their heads hit the pillow; they sleep like lazy, full bellied kittens.
If I’m going to do this, I have to move my fat ass now.
I wiggle out of Kaden’s hold, ever so careful not to wake him. With every movement he makes,
I go as stiff as a board. When he settles, I move again.
“Where are you going?” Ah s**t!
“Bathroom, then to get a drink. I’m ok. Go back to sleep.” I say softly and run my fingers
through his shoulder length dark hair. He leans up and kisses me.
“Don’t be too long, straight back, Court.” He mumbles, and I chuckle softly at his sleepy state.
His head hits the pillow again as he clutches my pillow and starts snoring again. I smirk at
him as I stand from the bed and walk towards the bathroom first. I was lying when I said I
needed the bathroom and a drink. So technically, I’m not doing anything I shouldn’t be.
I flush the toilet and walk out of the bathroom and Kaden is star fishing in the middle of the
bed. The quilt low around his waist giving me a delicious view of his bare muscular tattooed
back. His strong arms under the pillow, my mouth waters at the sight of his shoulders. The
same shoulder I would bite when he would bring me to orgasm.
Ok stop being a horny mess and move it!
I walk towards the bedroom door and open it quietly, looking down the dimly lit hallway. I
check for any movement and it’s so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I once again smirk to
myself as I walk down the hallway towards the stairs. My feet move silently as I make my way
towards the kitchen.
I get a bottle of water from the fridge and listen for any movement, and there is none. You
would think with the mansion being full of people, someone other than myself would be
awake at this hour. But no, it’s just me and bean.

I walk towards the door that is usually guarded, and I know Max is inside. I look once more
down the halls and then back at the door. I place my hand on the handle and push it down and
the door opens. I smile, doing a little shuffle as I enter the room.
Finding the light switch, I flip it on and the room lights up. Wow, it’s huge. This is definitely the
prison. There are doors that line the corridor that leads to double doors at the end. That must be the interrogation room. I close the door behind with a soft click and walk down, checking
each room.
I hear a groan and move towards the door where the noise came from. My eyes widen slightly, seeing Max sitting on the concrete floor. His wrists bound, his feet bare. My heart squeezes at
the sight of the kid.
He lifts his head and my breath catches in my throat. His face is swollen, bleeding, and
bruised. Jesus, what the hell did they do to him? Well, I know what they did, but still. He looks
like he is barely hanging on.
This is so f*****g wrong. I test the door and it opens. Max can’t escape. He is chained to the
wall.
He looks at me as I enter the room. His face drops when he sees me. I move to the chair that
is in the corner and place it in front of him. I sit in the chair and just look at him, looking over his injuries that my grandpa, dad and the rest have inflicted on him.
“Hello Max.” I say as I place my hand on my bump and he looks back up at me.
“Still alive?” He chuckles as he shakes his head and straightens up.
“It would seem so. Tell me Max, why did you do it? Why did you try to kill me and my baby?” I
ask him calmly as I open the water and drink it in front of him.
“Why else, you deserve everything that is coming your way.” He says, and I raise an eyebrow at
him.
“Is that so? Well, that is your opinion. You have been here a year and made no move before I came. So why now?” I ask him and I’m sure this is the most anyone has gotten out of him.
Little victories, but still it is hard to realise he is going to die.
“Why else? You are the heiress! Chief, is nobody but you? You are the one that needs to die and that bastard in your belly.” He spits and I chuckle, shaking my head at him as he tries and
fails to break his restraints.
“Did your daddy tell you that? Oh, I know who your parents are, Max, and I know you didn’t
want any part of this. What? Surprised that I figured it out? I know Grim is your dad. So cut the

s**t Max, tell me, do you want any part of this pathetic feud?” I ask him and he looks at me, his good eye wide.
“Don’t look so shocked. Max, you are a kid. Do you think your dad gives a s**t about you? Because he sent you to your death, he doesn’t give a f**k about you or anyone other than himself. That’s a fact. So come on Max, tell me why you did it? You do know you die in a few hours, right? Wouldn’t you want a friend by your side? I see you as my friend Max, not my enemy.” I say to him and he looks at me when one lone tear rolls down his cheek.
“My dad wants what Chief has and my mom, well, she fuels his need for power. She is after revenge for what happened.” My heart is pounding painfully in my chest.
“Michelle?” I ask, and he looks at me and nods his head. My world stops spinning at the
confirmation.
“Your mom was best friends with mine. Your mom thinks the reason her family was killed was
because of my family. She is wrong. It had nothing to do with my family and they have fed your
their hate and twisted the truth to fit their ideals. I’m sorry, Max, you have been lied to. So
Chloe is your sister, she isn’t mine?” I ask him and he nods his head. That is all I need.
“Chloe is my full sister. My mom is my dad’s ole lady, she has been for years. I didn’t know
that mom had passed Chloe off as Wolf’s daughter, not until recently. But when I found out, I
knew they had more secrets than I realised.” He says and I chuckle and he looks at me.
“Oh, I know about parents keeping secrets. This is all new to me. Why try to kill me? did Grim
or Michelle offer you something in exchange?” I ask him because that is something he hasn’t
divulged.
“My dad planted me here to gain information, to bring the MC down from the inside, but I
couldn’t. Chief has been nothing but kind to me. My mom wasn’t happy about it, but went
along with it. As for the attempted murder, I didn’t want any part of it. I do consider you as a friend Courtney and I am sorry for what I did,” He says, hanging his head in shame, his
shoulder shaking as he sobs.
“I never wanted to hurt anyone. Please forgive me.” He sobs and it breaks my heart.
I want to reach out to him and hug him, but I can’t; he planted the bomb that would have killed
me and my baby.
“Who told you to kill me and my baby, Max? What was the gain in doing so?” My stomach twists with dread, knowing the answer, but I need him to confirm it.
He lifts his head and looks at me, his face wet with tears.

“You took everything away. She said it was what you deserved for the pain you caused. That it
should be her, not you. That it has to be me that does this,” he says. My breathing picks up as
he lifts his head.
“It was Chloe. She wants you and your daughter dead.”
