Chapter 40.
Courtney POV.
“I’m so sorry, Courtney, I never should have listened to her. She really hates you. I know it is not your fault for what happened. But you should know the truth. Chloe was pregnant, but she wasn’t pregnant with Kaden’s baby. She did what mom did. She was already pregnant and was going to pin the pregnancy on Kaden, just like mom did with Wolf.” Max tells me and I feel
cold from his confession.
“But why? Did your mom fake the results?” I ask and he chuckles humourlessly.
“Yes, she did. She did it to drive you away and back to your mom. They had you followed. Mom wanted your mom dead. You were the added bonus. Two birds, one stone. I never wanted any part in this Courtney. Everything I was told about your family is wrong. I was blinded by their envy, their rage. That when I first came here, I was the same. Then, as I got to know Chief and the rest of the MC, I realised they were not what I was told. They take care of each other. Everyone benefits from the runs, the money the club generates. Not like ours, where what you make you keep,” he tells me and I’m deeply saddened by this.
The MC is like a family; the profits are shared evenly with everyone. That is what family does, the Brothers Of Mayhem are not a family, they aren’t even a real MC. They are only in it for themselves. They don’t give back; they don’t care. They have to be stopped more than ever now. As for the DNA results, I figured as much. Nothing surprises me anymore.
“Max, thank you for telling me this. I know you deeply regret what you did for them, and I think you know now that they had led you to your slaughter. I can’t see you die. There has to be a solution.” I say as I think how I can convince grandpa and other MCs to let him live. But to make it seem like we killed him so that Grim will know he has lost his contact. But how?
“If I could somehow speak to my grandpa, would you tell him what you told me? I may be able to save you. Don’t die needlessly for people that don’t give a f**k about you. The only reason my grandpa is absolutely fuming with you is because I know deep down, he cares for you. I know he doesn’t want to kill you, Max, so give me something I can work with. I can help you, but you need to help yourself as well.” I say to him as the tears leave my eyes, not just because I’m sad. I’m pissed that Grim and Michelle would do this to their son.
“I will tell him the truth, I promise.” He says and I nod my head against my better judgment. I stand and walk close to him and let him drink the water I bought with me. I only took a sip. He needs it more than I do.

I hug him and he sobs on my shoulder, still whispering he is sorry. This is wrong. I have to protect him. He may have tried to kill me, but Max is a good person.
“Max, if I help you and if I can set you free, you must be loyal to us, to the Devil’s Warriors. You will no longer be tied to the Brothers Of Mayhem. You will be loyal to me. If you betray me, you won’t need to worry about Chief, Wolf, or Venom. It is me who will take you out. Do I have your word?” I ask him as I move back and look at him and he gulps, nodding his head.
“I give you my word. I will be loyal to you and the Devil’s Warriors. I never wanted any part of
this,” he says and I sigh, nodding my head as I stand and move towards the chair and move back against the wall.
I walk to the door and look at Max and smile softly at him.
“I will see what I can do, but you have to cooperate. You made me a promise, and I have made
mine. Leave Chief to me. Stay strong Max. Try to rest.” I say to him as I leave the room and
close to the door behind me.
My head is swimming with what Max told me. I walk back to the door that leads to the
hallway in the mansion. I open the door and stop in my tracks.
My eyes widen slightly as I look up and see grandpa, dad, and Kaden all watching me. Well,
f**k my life.
“I knew you would not listen when I told you to leave it alone. But you got him to talk. That baby brain of yours is in full swing. You didn’t realise there were cameras in the room and we heard everything. I set the trap. You walked right into it. I knew you wouldn’t be able to stay away, no patience.” My grandpa tells me, but I don’t look away. I just stare at him defiantly.
“Yeah, well, I did say he is valuable, and you didn’t listen. Same as when I told you he would talk to me, again you didn’t listen. So f**k patience. You heard everything, right?” I look from my grandpa to my dad and Kaden, and they all look sad and pissed.
“Yeah, we did. Now we know the truth.” My dad says and I look at him sadly, but he is angry and rightly so. So is Kaden and let’s not forget my grandpa. They are all murderous right now.
“You made a deal with him. That was not part of the plan. You have no right to decide his fate, Courtney. He tried to kill you and you want to show him compassion?” Grandpa snaps at me
and I don’t flinch.
“Yes, I do. Did you not hear what he said? How you changed his view and his beliefs from what he was told? He looks up to all of you. Yes, he tried to kill me. Chloe, Michelle, and Grim are master manipulators. He knew no better. Chloe twisted his head, making him believe that I

was the enemy, that I deserved to die. He knows differently now. I want him spared. I want him
to be protected. Isn’t that what you do? Protect the innocent, help those in need? Well, I would
say Max qualifies.” I say, planting my hands on my hips as I stare my grandpa down.
“He knew what he was doing. He is not innocent.” My dad snaps and I look at him.
“Well, in that case, Chloe is not innocent, right? She gave him the orders. She is his sister, not
mine, and she certainly isn’t your f*****g child. It’s time you dealt with that, dad. Stop making
excuses for her. Chloe has been a snake since before I found out who she was. Max is
different. He needs our help. Or are you still stuck on the fact that you raised a child that
wasn’t yours
while you lost your blood?” I spit at him before his hand connects with my cheek.
My head whips to the side and I taste blood on my tongue as Kaden punches my dad and I step back as Kaden gets the upper hand. He is bigger and stronger than my dad. My grandpa
checks my face as Kaden shoves my dad to the floor, roaring in his face.
“Courtney is your f*****g daughter, if anyone deserves a god damn slap it’s Chloe!” Kaden
screams and I shake my head.
“You will let Max go. He will stay in the MC. If you don’t, then I walk. I will go to Grim myself.” I
say to my grandpa and he looks stunned as I step back from him with a sneer on my face.
I walk to my dad, who is being held down. I look at Kaden and nod my head and he lifts my
dad to his knees. He is looking at me with rage in his eyes.
I spit the blood in his face.
“There’s your blood. You are not my father. We’re done.” I say as I walk past them. Wolf
screams after me as Kaden gives his orders to put my father in the prison.
I need a plan, and Max is the one who can help me with it.
