Chapter 85.
Courtney POV.

It has been four weeks since I moved to the ranch. The house is decorated and all the furniture I bought arrived the hour after I did. The house is filled with my touches. The locals in town are all friendly and have helped me so much.
The nursery has been set up for bean and I have more clothes and things arriving for her
today. I met Kitty, Jerry, the taxi driver’s wife, and she used to be a midwife. She said to call her
and she will be help me.
The hospital is thirty minutes away, and it is small, nothing special, but it will do. I haven’t
been found and there has been no word around town about any bikers or men is suits looking
for me. The thing about small towns is everybody talks.
I was the talk of the town for about a week when I moved here. The mysterious young woman
who bought the old ranch and is pregnant with no husband. Ohhh, the scandal. But I just
chuckled and carried on with my life. Gossip I’m used to. Especially with the amount of times
momma and I moved.
I know they mean no harm and neither do I. All I want to do is create a loving home for my
daughter and I will do no matter how long it takes. I have been torn in reaching out to Kaden,
though.
But I quickly let that thought go as soon as it arrives. He should get on with his life and just
move on. We will never go back, not after everything.
The door bell rings and I stand with great difficulty and waddle my huge ass to the door. I
check before I open it and it’s the delivery man. His name is Carl and seems like a decent guy.
I open the door and smile at him.
Carl is quite old but is nice. He reminds me of grandpa but he is nothing like him. I think it is
just the age thing. But no matter. I’m far away and they won’t find me.
“Morning, miss Gemma. Think I got more baby things for you. Sign here for me.” He hands me the parcel and I sign my new name on the handheld device.
“Thanks Carl. See you later.” I say and he nods and walks back to his postal van. I wait until he is gone and shut and lock the door. A habit I have been doing since I moved here. The
crime level here is low, but you can never be too careful.
I carry the parcel to the kitchen and grab the scissors, and open it. I smile as I pull out the

baby clothes, all pink and soft. Before I carry them to the utility room and into the washer.
Once I have done that.
I enter the kitchen again and grab my snacks and make my way to the living room and plop
down on the sectional grey plush sofa and turn on the TV.
The news flashes on and I stop to read the headline. Oh s**t!
“Today the Ivanov crime family lay Peter Ivanov to rest. It is not known what happened to the Russian crime lord, only that he was gun downed in his home in LA. His only surviving relative Katya Ivanov, his daughter, will now be in charge of the Ivanov empire.” Well, I’ll be damned.
Katya is beautiful. Her skin is as white as snow. She has long raven hair and green eyes. She looks like the grieving daughter. But I know better. In her eyes is triumph. So she must have killed him. Good for her. As the camera pans out, I spit my snacks out. What the hell?
Havoc? He is standing beside her in a black suit with his arm around her waist. Well, just wow.
Good for him. He needs someone who will match his crazy.
So that is where Kaden went. I mean, how else would it explain that Havoc knows Katya? So
that tells me he was there when Katya killed her father. But why? Why go to Ivanov?
No, no. Not my circus. I change the channel and settle on a film.
I get comfortable and just get lost in the film. Bean’s movements haven’t been a lot less lately and I know it is because she has no room to move and we are getting close to my due date.
Only a month to go, but I know she can come at any time.
Again, I will be doing this alone. But I have made peace with that fact. We don’t need them. We
have each other.
I wake up cold, and the sun is setting. I yawn and stretch. I must have needed that nap. I sit up and stand as I gather all my snacks and take them back to the kitchen. Oh, shoot the laundry. After I have grabbed everything out and put them in the dryer, I grab a drink and decide I’m
going to have a shower and get ready for bed.
I hear a crash coming from the back of the house and stop on the stairs. Could be a wild animal? I listen and nothing. I carry on up the stairs to my bedroom and open the bedside table and take out the gun I have kept there just in case. I move to the nursery and towards the window and see two raccoons in my bins. I chuckle. Little rascals.
I leave the nursery and head to the shower. Once I’m done and in my pyjamas, I leave the
bedroom and walk back downstairs. I check the front door and it is still locked. Walking
through the house to the back, I open the door and my bin has toppled over. I sigh and walk to

clean it all up. I need a bin shed or something to stop the raccoons from getting in them.
The house is quiet, and some would find that eerie, but not me. I like the quiet. As I walk back to the living room, I sigh. Ok I am lonely but I need to do this. I can do this and I will.
It’s such a nice evening. So I decide to sit on the front porch swing. So I do.
I sit down and just watch as the sun sets, casting the skin in orange and pink. I lean back and sigh, resting my hand on my bump. The house is not that far from the road, so I can hear the odd passing car or tractor.
I sit here for a little while longer when I hear what sounds like a motorbike. My eyes widen slightly as the sound grows louder as it passes the road that leads here and gets further away. I breathe a breath of relief. Ok Courtney, you are panicking over nothing.
Not every bike you hear is not going to be them. After a while, I head inside and lock the door before making my dinner. I’m really not that hungry, but I need to eat, so I make a sandwich and take my seat on the sofa. I look at my phone and shake my head. No, they don’t need to
know where you are.
They don’t deserve to know where you are. They don’t deserve you. With that thought in mind, I go onto a streaming service and settle down to watch a show.
A few hours in, I hear another noise coming from outside. I pause the show and listen again. Then I hear it again. Damn raccoons. I stand and move to the back and stop in my tracks.
A man is standing watching me from my back porch. My heart is in my throat as he doesn’t take his eyes from mine and I back away slowly. I look at the counter and see my gun. I make a quick dash for the gun and aim it, but the man is gone. Who the f**k was that?
I move to the door and look out, but nothing everywhere is dark. I back away once more and
into the living room.
“Hello Courtney!” I jump with a squeal and raise the gun and point it at the woman sitting on my sofa like she owns the place.
“Katya Ivanov.”
