CHAPTER 15
Later that night, Griffin returned to the apartment exhausted.
The empty space struck him immediately–not a trace of me remained.

He felt disoriented, remembering how weeks ago he’d noticed my belongings disappearing. When he’d asked, I’d claimed I was throwing out old things. There had been nothing wrong with that explanation, but now he understood the truth. I hadn’t been discarding items; I’d been packing them away.
I had known he wouldn’t marry me and had prepared to leave.
But when had I discovered his plans?
The wedding invitation on the coffee table caught his eye, its crimson color seeming to mock him.
Before he could react, Chloe snatched it up, tore it to pieces, and dumped it in the trash.
“Why is Tessa’s stuff still here?” she said with a mix of jealousy and disgust. “A
wedding invitation of all things–how unlucky! I can’t believe that Kingsley guy is so blind he’d marry someone like her.”
For some reason, Griffin felt a flash of annoyance at her words. That feeling of annoyance disappeared real quick when Chloe pressed up against Griffin, moving in ways I’d never seen her act before. She whispered things in his ear that made his face flush, her hands already working on his shirt buttons. “I’ve been thinking about you all day,” she purred, touching him in ways that seemed way too practiced for someone who claimed to be so innocent. She knew exactly where to touch him to get a reaction, like she’d been studying a manual on his body.
Her fingers trailed down his chest and lower, gripping and stroking with the confidence of someone who’d done this plenty of times before. Griffin’s eyes glazed over as she kept touching him in spots that had him gasping. Without thinking, he scooped her up, heading for their bedroom.
Before they even made it there, Chloe squirmed in his arms. “Let’s not bother with the bedroom,” she said, her voice husky but calculated. She nodded toward the huge windows overlooking the city. “Right here, against the glass. People in those buildings might see us… doesn’t that get your blood pumping?”
The way she suggested it wasn’t like a shy girl trying something new. It was like she was pulling out a move she’d used successfully many times before. Now that they had rings on their fingers, Chloe obviously planned to show Griffin all her favorite tricks.

Griffin swallowed hard, torn between desire and a weird feeling in his gut that something was off. But his body won that argument real fast. The cool glass soon fogged up where her back pressed against it, the city lights making their skin glow as they moved together.
She knew exactly what to do with her body–when to push back, when to take control, when to make those little noises that drove him crazy. It wasn’t the awkward first–time fumbling he expected. Instead, she directed their whole encounter without saying a word, just using her body with shocking expertise. After they finished and were lying on the floor catching their breath, Griffin couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. Everything had been too perfect, too choreographed. She hadn’t hesitated or needed guidance even once.
When he traced his fingers over her skin with a thoughtful look, Chloe quickly noticed and rolled on top of him with a fake–sounding giggle. “I just watched a lot of movies,” she said with an exaggerated wink. “And I read those spicy romance novels.”
Griffin nodded like he believed her, but he didn’t buy it for a second. Something definitely didn’t add up, and the nagging feeling wouldn’t go away.
He resolved to hire a discreet investigator to look into Chloe’s past. After tonight, he strongly suspected her innocent persona was entirely fabricated.
As Griffin contemplated this, his phone rang. It was his new assistant, panic evident in her voice.
“Mr. Hayes, the bid presentation is tomorrow, but the client says we haven’t
submitted our proposal yet.”
“What?” Griffin’s voice rose in disbelief. “How is that possible? Wasn’t Tessa handling the proposal? Didn’t she submit it?”
The assistant sounded confused. “But Ms. Parker resigned weeks ago.”
“Why wasn’t I told immediately?” Griffin shouted.
“I tried to tell you, sir, but you were busy with Ms. Blake and the wedding plans-” “Enough!” Griffin cut her off. “This conversation is pointless now. Contact all project managers immediately and have them put together a proposal tonight!” “But sir, there’s no time, and Tessa always handled these proposals herself—” “Are you telling me this company falls apart without one employee? Get it done! If I don’t have that proposal by tonight, you can all clear out your desks!”
Griffin hung up, his head pounding. He finally realized what had happened–the

Each time he’d pressured me about the proposal, I’d remained silent because I had no intention of completing it.
I had planned my exit thoroughly.
I was done with him and done with Hayes Enterprises.
