CHAPTER 4

Chloe just smiled mysteriously, saying everyone would know who she was marrying soon enough.
Others might not know, but I knew perfectly well–Chloe was marrying Griffin.
If I remembered correctly, Chloe was Griffin’s former classmate who’d been
specially hired during Hayes Enterprises‘ first year.
At the time, Griffin had wanted to groom Chloe as his new assistant, but no matter how patiently I tried to teach her, she couldn’t even manage the simplest tasks like stamping documents, let alone handling contract negotiations or personal matters like I did.
So Griffin abandoned the idea of making her his assistant and reassigned her to reception, where she could serve as eye candy…

The irony was that this pretty, useless woman had defeated me and captured Griffin’s heart.
For twelve years, I’d been on the front lines fighting for him, while Chloe did nothing but exist–and somehow received everything I’d worked so hard for but never obtained.
A chill spread through my heart. My dedicated service to the company, my attentive care for Griffin–it had all become a joke, me laboring to create someone else’s happy ending.
As everyone continued questioning Chloe, Griffin suddenly appeared. “What’s everyone gathering around for? Don’t you all have work to do?”
At the sound of his voice, the crowd dispersed, everyone returning to their stations. Griffin turned to me. “Weren’t you taking time off? Why are you still here?”
“I just heard the receptionist is getting married. I came over to congratulate her.” Griffin frowned. “She didn’t mention who she’s marrying, did she?”
“No. Why?”
“No reason. Just asking.” When I said she hadn’t, Griffin visibly relaxed.
The newly calm Griffin continued, “Don’t bother cooking dinner tonight. I’m going out drinking with friends and will be home late. Since you won’t be cooking, work on the proposal for that new project. I don’t trust anyone else with it…” He was still ordering me around despite knowing I was on vacation.
He was maintaining his facade perfectly–even while secretly planning to marry someone else, he was determined to squeeze every last drop of value from me. But I refused to play along any longer…

I didn’t respond.
When Griffin noticed my silence, he frowned and insisted, “Did you hear me?”
I walked away without answering, feeling his eyes on my back.
Griffin stared after me, furrowing his brow. Was it his imagination, or was I acting increasingly strange?
But then he reasoned that I’d been devoted to him for twelve years. If he just flashed me a smile and sweet–talked me a little, I’d be back to normal.
Reassured by this thought, Griffin dismissed his concerns.
I returned to the apartment and looked around the place I’d come to consider my second home. After some thought, I decided to pack up all my belongings.
Since I’d made the decision to leave, I should clear out completely, making room for the true future mistress of this house.
I spent from midday until late night packing, filling several suitcases with my personal items.
As darkness fell, my stomach growled with hunger.
Just as I was about to get something to eat, my phone buzzed loudly.
