Nicholas‘ POV
“I was so stupid,” I muttered, mostly to myself. “I was too wrapped up in myself, in my job, in… Hazel. I was blind, Sabrina. I was blind to all the pain you were going through.”
I closed my eyes, trying to hold back the tears that were finally falling uncontrollably. “I should have been the first person you trusted. But I didn’t even know you were fighting something this big. I didn’t know how hard it was for you to walk every day. Instead, I blamed you, made you feel worthless…”
felt tight. ”
I took a deep breath, but my chest felt tight. “I’m sorry, Sabrina. I’m sorry for everything I’ve done or not done. If I had known, I wouldn’t have left you alone like this. I would never have let you fight alone.”
The sound of the medical equipment kept ticking as if a constant reminder that time was ticking. I rubbed her hand slowly, begging her to wake up, so I could fix everything
I don’t know if she heard me or not. But I swore to myself, God gave me this second chance, I wouldn’t waste it again.
I woke up with a small jolt, realizing that I was still holding Sabrina’s hand. The light from the hospital corridor crept in through the gap in the door that was slowly opened by a nurse. Her footsteps were light, but enough to wake me from my not–so–deep sleep.
“Excuse me, sir,” she said softly, glancing at me sitting on the chair beside Sabrina’s bed. She brought some equipment to check Sabrina’s condition. I just nodded slightly, releasing my grip on Sabrina’s hand so that the nurse could approach.
She started checking Sabrina’s blood pressure and then her body temperature with a digital device. My eyes were fixed on Sabrina’s face which was still closed. There was great hope in my chest that she would open her eyes right now, looking at me like usual, but reality said otherwise. Her face remained still, pale, and not reacting at all.
The nurse smiled softly as if understanding how deep the anxiety that was gripping my heart was. “Time for the checkup, sir,” she said, her voice calm and soothing. I nodded, trying to distract myself from the worry that continued to haunt me. Seeing Sabrina lying there, her body surrounded by rows of medical equipment, a sense of despair began to cloud my mind.
“I’ll stay here,” I whispered, as if only to myself. The nurse continued her work, checking the monitor that monitored Sabrina’s condition. Each steady beep became rhythmic as if giving hope that she was still on the right track.
In a few minutes, the nurse finished her task. She motioned for me to talk to Sabrina. “Talk to her. Your voice might help her feel better,” she said before leaving the room.
I looked back at Sabrina’s pale face, trying to remember all the beautiful memories we had together. “Sabrina,” I said, my voice shaking. “I know we’ve been caught in a lot of mistakes, and I’m so sorry. I promise I’ll change. And if you come back, we’ll fix everything together.”
My heartbeat fluttered as a small hope emerged in my mind I felt the presence of love and the desire to fight for what we once had. With all my heart, I took her hand, holding it as if it were the only thing that could connect us amidst this darkness.
“Open your eyes, Sabrina,” I said softly. “I never stopped waiting for you. And I will never give up.”
My smile was faint amidst my tears. Somehow, I knew that hope was not completely gone.
“Why isn’t she awake yet?” I asked, my voice lower than I wanted. There was a tone of anxiety that I couldn’t hide. “Is… something wrong?”

The nurse stared at me for a moment, seemingly trying to ease my anxiety before answering “Nothing is wrong, sir. Mrs. Sabrina’s condition is still stable. However, her body is working hard to fight off the infection and the effects of her illness. It’s only natural that she needs more me to recover from a condition like this.”
I nodded, though her words were not enough to calm my mind. “But why isn’t she awake yet?” I repeated, hoping for a more convincing answer.
The nurse smiled faintly, though there was a hint of sympathy on her face.
“The human body has its own way of recovering, sir. Sometimes, a long sleep is the body’s way of conserving energy to fight off illness. We just need to be patient and keep an eye on the situation.”
I could only take a deep breath, looking down and staring a Sabrina’s fingers that were drooping on the white sheet. They looked much weaker than before. I don’t know how I could have been so careless that I didn’t notice her declining health.
After finishing the examination, the nurse glanced at me again. “If there is any change, call us immediately, sir. We will always be ready to help.”
“Yes, of course. Thank you,” I replied softly.
I smiled thinly at the nurse before she left, leaving me alone with Sabrina. My hands trembled as I held Sabrina’s warm hands. My gaze was empty as I realized how fragile life is. I promised myself that I would never be careless in caring for her again. Sabrina is everything to me, and I must do everything for her.
With a heavy heart, I kissed Sabrina’s forehead before sitting down beside her. The scent of medicine and antiseptic filled the room, creating an atmosphere that seemed to suppress my breath. I closed my eyes and prayed, begging for her to recover soon and return to my arms.
Every second felt like an eternity, and I knew this journey would not be easy. But I vowed to always be by her side, even when things got tough. In my mind, I recalled our beautiful moments–laughing in the sunlight, sharing dreams at night. All those memories strengthened my resolve.
