The engagement party was packed, everyone was there.
This was the first time that Tiffany had been inside that family’s circle.

It wasn’t the old house either.
The engagement party was held at some fancy place, high security.
She was standing by her husband’s side, seeing Ben for the first time.
He was wearing an expensive suit, the red tie
was making him look hot.
Tiffany didn’t talk to him, you weren’t supposed
to look at him too long.
When she went outside to get some air, she
saw the guy get a phone call.
Tiffany was holding her purse, listening to all the gossip, then a name was mentioned. She pulled on her husband’s arm. “Did you say Jane? That rich boy was playing around with a girl named Jane? That Jane from my old college?”
Her husband, Tom, rolled his eyes, “Don’t know, probably.”
Tiffany remembered all the questions. Things
were starting to connect.
She’d gotten the full story now.
“So all you guys knew? He had her for five

years and you all just laughed?”

“We all heard, but no one cared. It’s a game,
he’ll be back.”
That’s when Ben rushed out of the room.
Tiffany screamed, “You jerk, stop!”
Tom tugged her, “What are you doing? You hate Jane, stop it!”
“I don’t like her-” Tiffany looked at Ben, “but I can still feel bad for her. Five years, five years, that’s a woman’s life. You’re rich and you crush people, are you that bored?”
“I’m saying, she was gorgeous and smart.
Everybody at school wanted her, the rich guys were throwing money just to take her out. What happened? It’s because of you, you trapped her!”
Tom pulled on her sleeve, “Tiffany, stop, we’ll lose everything!”
Tiffany pushed him away, “I don’t respect you.
You guys are laughing at Jane, but I’m laughing at you, you’re a coward.”
Ben didn’t look angry, just calm, “When did she find out?”

She stayed quiet.
He got a call from the landlord. “You guys were
supposed to leave today. I came to check, but
no one is there?”
He needed to do something, He had told her, “I need to talk to you when I get back.”
Jane had just looked at him. She was too quiet. She held everything back.
Ben took a step forward, but he looked back,
“If I was always me, it would have been five seconds, not five years.”
Tiffany wrote that down on her phone.
The car sped to their old apartment but turned halfway.
Then, he raced to the airport.
