Chapter 9
I had warned my parents about Jake, but there
was still some tension when we showed up at
the house.
Sitting on the couch, Jake said to me, “Too bad
your dad doesn’t drink. I could get him on my
side.”
I rolled my eyes and whispered, “You’re my
future husband, not my dad.”
“Oh, What did you call me just now? I didn’t
hear it. Say it again.”

“No way,” I said, laughing.
“Please…”
My dad cleared his throat.
He stood up, serious, and politely handed my
dad his teacup. “Thank you.”

On Christmas night, Jake and I were watching
our new show.
It was the first show in years. My mom invited a
lot of family and friends to the house to watch

The living room was crammed.
Jake was tall, handsome, and well–dressed.
Everyone loved him and told my mom how lucky
she was to have such a beautiful daughter and

There were compliments, but jealousy also stirred.

My aunt said with a sneer, “It doesn’t take a lot
to be a manager these days. Olivia can’t be fooled…”
My other aunt kicked her. Their mom and dad had passed away, so she was the head of the family.
The aunt didn’t want to say anything and moved her face to the side.
“Snacks, everyone! You have to try this. It’s a
local treat! It’s so good! When Olivia was little,
she would cry if I didn’t buy this for her.” My
aunt handed the snack plate to Jake and
changed the subject.
Jake smiled, took a handful of snacks, sat
down and whispered to me “So you were a

Everyone laughed, and the tension faded.

When the TV show started, everyone stared at Jake.
The aunt whispered to my mom, “He’s a movie star, too, right?”
My mom smiled. “As long as my daughter is happy.”
Jake and I laughed.
During the show, my cousin was scrolling
through his phone.
He suddenly said, “Look! This guy looks just
like Olivia’s boyfriend! He’s rich! My games are
all made by his company!”

“Thank you!” my cousin said.
