Chapter 5
Benedict accompanied Charlotte to travel around for a few days.
The moment he learned that she had woken up, he was indeed ecstatic. But every time he thought of that period in the hospital, his heart surged with unspeakably complex emotions.
At that time, he thought she would never wake up. That pain made him do something ridiculous.
These days, he was obedient to Charlotte. She wanted the jewellery he bought. She wanted to go on a trip, he accompanied her.
But whenever he saw Gaudentia’s sadly departing back, his heart would always be flooded with inexplicable annoyance.
He told himself that since Gaundetia was to be his fiancée and become a
member of the Ermintrude Family, he would give her anything as long as she was at peace. As for Charlotte, a resort was also considered enough compensation.
Thinking of that phone call from Gaundetia during the day today, he quickened his pace. When he pushed open the door of the villa, Charlotte greeted him in a silk halter nightgown. The silk fabric stuck to her delicate curves and glowed ambiguously in the under light.
Benedict subconsciously took half a step back. His brows knitted slightly.
“Why are you here? Where’s Gaudentia?”
Charlotte pouted in aggravation. “She’s going to get married.”
Saying this, her fingers restlessly drew circles on his chest. “Now… There are finally only two of us left.”
Benedict suddenly felt the collar tighten. He pulled open his tie.
“Married? Who is she married to?”
“Dominic Roussel. She didn’t tell you?”
Charlotte came close to his ear and whispered, “Your engagement is invalid.”
Charlotte’s lips almost touched his earlobe. “Benedict, we were supposed to be together right now.”
Benedict sank. The engagement had returned to him and Charlotte. He should have been happy, but when he heard that Gaundetia was going to marry Dominic, it was like something was blocking his heart.

He avoided Charlotte’s intimate moves. Benedict hastily changed the topic.
“Charlotte, haven’t you always wanted to eat that Michelin? Let’s go and eat. Then I’ll buy you something after you finish eating.”
In the following days, Benedict pampered Charlotte extremely.
He airlifted a whole of one million Bulgarian roses and laid the entire Ermintrude’s Mansion into a sea of flowers. He chartered a three–star Michelin restaurant for a whole month, just for Charlotte to say casually, “I like the desserts here“. He even spared no expense in auctioning rare pink diamonds just to win her smile.
The entire upper–class circle in the city of Liechtenstein were spreading the rumour that Mr. Benedict was trying to spoil Charlotte for heaven.
But whenever it was late at night, he stood in the empty villa. He would always unconsciously look at the room where Gaundetia once lived. It was now excessively tidy, as if it had never been inhabited.
He stood in the doorway and suddenly remembered when Gaundetia had just moved in on the first day. She always liked to put a small night light above her bed. The warm yellow light would come through the cracks in the door. Sometimes when he passed by the piano, he would inexplicably stop for no reason. In her room, the items belonging to her have long been emptied, leaving only a string of rosary beads lying alone in the corner of the drawer.
He picked it up and looked at it for a while. Benedict then threw it back in annoyance.
