I was surprised to get a call from Chad so
quickly.
I’d only sent the email five minutes ago. It shouldn’t have even reached him yet.
But he sounded frantic on the phone, telling me to come back to the party, saying there was a
<
misunderstanding.
I could hear the worry in his voice.
I thought about the happy times we’d shared.
My heart softened a little. I sighed and headed
back to the party.
Chad was waiting for me at the door.
He grabbed my wrist and dragged me toward
the front row.
I stumbled along, my wrist throbbing, but I kept
my mouth shut, seeing how worked up he was.
Tiffany was sitting in the front row, arms
crossed, looking away.
Chad pulled my hand over, grabbed the ring,
and shoved it onto my finger. But it got stuck
halfway, right above my knuckle.
<
Chad’s face lit up. He practically yelled at
Tiffany, “See! It doesn’t even fit! I told you, this
ring was made for you!”
He was so busy laughing that he didn’t even
notice my hand was shaking, shaking from all
the hurt.
Tiffany turned her head, looking happy for a
second, but then she frowned at the ring on my
hand.
She pouted and whined to Chad, “But it’s
already been on her finger!”
“And it was too dark in the back to notice. And
it makes the ring look dirty.”
I was a mess. After Chad’s call, I’d rushed over
without even washing my face.
I realized that I was nothing more than a tool
for Chad and his assistant to mock.
く
Chad didn’t care what I was thinking.
He ripped my hand away and pushed me.
“You had to grab it, so good for you?”
He paused, then tossed the ring at me.

“It’s a good fit for trash, remember the ring is
from me and Tiffany.”
He looked at Tiffany and said sweetly, “It’s
okay, we can just toss it. I’ll buy you a new one, however many you want.”
Looking at the ring in my hand, it was like my
heart was cracking into pieces.
Three years ago, when Chad and I got married…
I didn’t want him to waste money when he was
broke, so I offered to just skip the rings.
We used plastic rings in the ceremony.
He had knelt down and promised to buy me a thousand rings someday.

And now, the first diamond ring I’d ever gotten from him was nothing more than a poorly fitted piece of junk.
Like me.
The MC suddenly answered her phone, turned on the speaker, and said, “Chad wanted me to give Sarah’s ring to someone in the audience for fun, as her fat hands could barely wear it.”
My coworkers went nuts, cheering and yelling.
I stood up, threw the ring into the crowd, and pulled out my phone again.
I sent Chad another file.
<
The first one was my resignation. The second
was a copy of our divorce papers.
