My phone rang. I thought it was the driver
downstairs.
I answered it without looking, and Chad’s voice
blasted through the speaker.
“Sarah! What are you trying to pull?”
When I didn’t answer, he kept going, his voice

full of anger.
“I already told you, nothing is happening with Tiffany. Why are you posting these weird
comments? After three years of marriage, don’t
you trust me?”
I finally understood why he was calling. I didn’t
care enough to explain anything to him.
I just said, “Okay.”
He didn’t expect me to be so calm. He
hesitated.
Then he said, “Whatever. We can talk about this
when I get home.”
Home?
Chad, you don’t even get it. We don’t have a
home anymore.

The driver honked. I grabbed my suitcase and
left the place where I’d spent three years with
him.
The next morning, I went to the office to finalize
my resignation.
HR processed the papers without even looking
at me.
No one knew I was still technically the owner’s
wife.
I bumped into Chad and Tiffany as they walked
into the office.
He stopped in his tracks, looked around to
make sure no one was listening, and then said
smugly, “Good. Looks like you learned your
lesson.”
“You should have done this from the start.

You’re not supposed to ask, wait for me to tell
you the truth.”
He left Tiffany’s side and walked up to me,
reeking of her perfume.
“Tiffany needed to settle in to her new
apartment, so I am helping her for the next few
days.”
I actually laughed. I realized why Chad hadn’t
blown up my phone last night.
He didn’t even know I was gone.
Tiffany walked over and wrapped her arm
around his.
In her clingy voice, she said, “See, Chad?
Sarah’s happy! I helped her become a good
wife.”
Chad rubbed her head. Hearing that, he
<
laughed.
I snapped. I glared at Tiffany.
“So you know I’m his wife?”
“Yeah. Chad told me a while ago. But…”
Tiffany looked me up and down.
“Well. You have to try to live up to Chad to
make sure you are good enough for him.”
I lost it. I slapped her across the face.
“You’re a homewrecker, you’re…”
I couldn’t even spit on her before I got slapped,
too.
Chad’s face was scary, and his hand still hung
in the air.

I didn’t know how hard he’d hit me. My face
was numb, and my ears were ringing.
“Enough! I thought you were learning
something. And you’re still such trash.”
Tiffany touched her face.
“It’s okay, Chad. Sarah thought there was
something going on.”
She looked at me.
“I got too close to him, hit me more if you like.”
Chad rubbed Tiffany’s face.
“Don’t blame yourself, blame her for being so
petty.”
He spat another look at me.
“Why can’t you be as nice and caring as
<
Tiffany?”
I rubbed my face. The pain in my face didn’t
compare to what I was feeling inside. I had to
bite back the tears.
The office door opened.
The manager leaned out, looking annoyed.
“Sarah! Are you here for the exit interview?
What is going on!?”
Chad finally noticed the papers in my hand. The
moment he saw the title, his face changed.
