Elizabeth’s smile was tinged with irony. “No need to waste your worry on me, Mr. Norris. After all, Sandra is the one who can do no wrong in your heart.”
Elijah’s face hardened as he strode determinedly towards the door.
“Mrs….” After a brief glance at Beverly, Oliver chose his words carefully, skipping over “Mrs. Norris” entirely. Facing Elizabeth, he explained, “Mr. Norris didn’t mean to come across that way. He spent the entire night searching for you and specifically directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation. His concern for you might have sharpened his words…”
Elijah had barely left the room when his voice, brimming with dissatisfaction, echoed from the doorway. “Oliver, if you’re planning to stay in the hospital, don’t bother returning.”
“Mr. Norris has a hard time putting his feelings into words. Don’t focus on what he says—pay attention to his actions,” Oliver chimed in quickly, setting down another bag. He darted off, rushing to catch up with Elijah.
Elizabeth, reclining against her pillow, didn’t take Oliver’s words seriously.
As Elijah’s closest ally, Oliver was always inclined to present him in a favorable light.
Even though they were still technically married, and Elijah was only doing what was expected of him, Elizabeth found herself detached and unswayed by these gestures.
Beverly approached to assist Elizabeth with changing her clothes.
As she did, Elizabeth opened up about the night’s turmoil. “I had no one else to turn to here, so I had to burden you. It’s a rather undignified situation, so I’d appreciate it if you kept this confidential.”
Beverly nodded enthusiastically, her three fingers raised beside her cheek as a pledge. “I swear on my life, not a word about today will pass my lips!”
After her vow, she paused, her gaze lingering on Elizabeth, filled with curiosity.
Elizabeth offered a subdued smile and said, “If you’re curious about anything, feel free to ask.”
Beverly edged closer and murmured softly, “Are you and Mr. Norris romantically involved?”
Elizabeth paused for a moment before replying, “No, it’s quite complicated with us, but I expect it will all be resolved soon.”
Observing Elizabeth’s earlier aloof interactions with Elijah, Beverly hastily concluded that he had sought to keep Elizabeth on the side, a proposition Elizabeth had evidently rebuffed. Beverly’s admiration for Elizabeth deepened significantly at this thought.
She nodded earnestly, her voice firm yet gentle. “I understand. Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.”
Elizabeth’s expression turned pensive, a slight crease forming between her brows. She considered clarifying the misunderstanding but was interrupted as the nurse reappeared.
Overwhelmed and drained, Elizabeth resigned herself to the nurse’s care, allowing the IV to be administered. She soon succumbed to a troubled sleep.
Her dreams were tumultuous, clouded with the shadows of recent ordeals, featuring the stoic visage of Elijah’s cold look and Sandra’s smug smirk.
When Elizabeth awoke, the IV had already been removed, and she found Beverly sleeping soundly in the adjacent bed.
The stark, barren room amplified the coldness enveloping her, and a profound sadness washed over Elizabeth, leaving her feeling more isolated than ever.
