Startled, Elizabeth froze as Ruby began pounding on the door, her voice filled with urgency. “Elizabeth, you won’t believe this! The Norris Group is calling us! Do you think they’re reaching out to hold us accountable?” Elizabeth was abruptly awakened, her fury simmering as she flung the covers off and stomped barefoot to the door.
Although she had blocked Elijah’s and Oliver’s numbers, she hadn’t considered that they would contact Ruby instead.
Her rage intensified.
The audacity they had to overshadow her, tarnish her reputation, and then deny her a chance to respond was infuriating.
With each infuriating thought, her anger surged. She yanked the door open and snatched the phone from Ruby’s hands. “Hand it over!”
Ruby complied without objection, gently offering the phone to Elizabeth while advising, “Just listen to what they have to say, okay? Try to stay calm.”
Elizabeth clenched her jaw but remained silent.
Alright. Her curiosity got the better of her.
After steadying herself with a deep breath, she lifted the phone and said in a cold, cutting tone, “What do you want?”
“Mrs. Norris,” Oliver began politely from the other end. “Mr. Norris is aware of the trending topics. He’s asked me to handle it, so it’ll be resolved shortly and won’t cause you any trouble.”
Elizabeth stood rigid, momentarily paralyzed by the revelation.
She struggled to comprehend that Elijah was actively working to erase the hashtags targeting her.
A fissure seemed to form in the icy shell encasing her heart, causing her to clutch the doorknob even tighter.
Her frosty heart showed signs of thawing, if only slightly.
Yet she swiftly suppressed these budding emotions.
She shook her head in denial.
Deep down, she understood this wasn’t truly about her welfare.
They were still legally married, and in the eyes of the world, she upheld the dignity of the Norris family as Elijah’s wife.
She surmised that his actions were likely motivated by preserving the family’s image, rather than her personal well-being.
