Sandra, thoroughly stunned, could only turn away, her face a picture of silent fury as she glanced tearfully at Elijah.
Elijah’s features were clouded with irritation as he addressed Elizabeth. “What’s gotten into you recently? Your words are sharper than ever.”
“Are you just going to disregard everything she said about me?” Elizabeth’s voice cracked, worn thin by frustration.
Had Elijah been open to discussing things civilly, they might not have been teetering on the edge of separation.
Cutting herself off, Elizabeth grabbed her bag from the back of her chair with a weary sigh. “Mr. Rodgers, perhaps we should save business talks for another time. I’ll contact you later.”
As she moved to leave, Soren stood. “Let me escort you out.”
Elizabeth breezed past Elijah without a glance, her pace determined and swift. Soren, unaware of Elijah’s identity, simply followed her out as if they were alone in the room.
Elijah stood there, a mix of bewilderment and irritation bubbling inside him as he watched them leave. This indifference from Elizabeth, his wife in name, was a stinging blow to his ego.
He had once reveled in her complete attention.
Now, dismissed so nonchalantly, he found himself adjusting his tie in frustration, seeking some small comfort.
Once Elizabeth and Soren were out of sight, Sandra ventured cautiously, “Is Ms. Elizabeth’s sudden push for separation because she’s being supported by someone else?”
Her voice was quiet and intentional, each word measured to assess Elijah’s response.
When he offered no retort, Sandra’s voice softened with understanding. “I understand, though. As a homemaker with no financial concerns, it’s easy for emotions to spiral and turn into exaggerated situations.”
Irritated, Elijah massaged his temples. “Supported by someone else? I’ve provided her with the best of everything. How many women in Orkset enjoy the privileges she does?”
Sandra sighed, her tone tinged with resignation.
