Just how obsessed with Jonathan had I been for everyone to refuse to believe that I truly wanted to divorce him?
“Let’s stop talking about him. It’s annoying,” I said, cutting him off.
“The reason I wanted to see you is to thank you for saving my life that day. Tell me straight- what do you need me to do?”
Frederick raised an eyebrow. “You’re up to do anything?”
I answered sternly, “As long as it’s not illegal, and it’s in my power.”
He looked like he had lost interest. He stared at me for a moment, then suddenly frowned.” Why do I feel like you’re different from before?”
“Am I?”
I ran my fingers through my hair. Other than Gabrielle, I didn’t particularly want anyone else to know that I had amnesia.
Besides, I didn’t even know what relationship I had with Frederick. Gabrielle had told me that he had pursued me before, but I had rejected him, and that alone seemed awkward enough.
I forced a small smile. “What’s different? Maybe I’m just still in shock from the drowning a few days ago.”
“Elise, what’s really going on?”
Frederick furrowed his brows, suddenly serious. ‘We’ve known each other for so many years. If there’s something wrong, you can tell me.”
“We’ve known each other for many years?” I asked, taken aback.
Based on what Gabrielle said, we indeed knew each other. But what did he mean by “many years“? Had we known each other since college?
He tapped the table. “Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten me.”
I replied with a half–smile. “Should I remember you?”
His eyes studied me carefully, as if trying to see right through me.
“Elise, you’re acting really strange. Since you woke up from your suicide attempt, you’ve been acting differently. Is it because of Jonathan?”
I scoffed bitterly. “Even you can tell that I’m different, but he can’t. There’s really no point continuing with that marriage.”
It was like Frederick had heard something absu “You’re really intending to divorce him?”
“Is it that surprising? I asked, sipping my coffee
“Just based on what happened the day I fell into the pool, don’t you think that’s reason enough to want a divorce?”
He shook his head. “I never thought you were serious about divorcing him, not with how obsessed you were with him.”
A teasing smile appeared on his lips as he looked at me, “When you married Jonathan, your were basically crazy in love. You had to stick right by his side wherever you went, and you couldn’t stand to see any women around him, especially not Alicia…”
“I was that crazy?
Even though Gabrielle had mentioned this before, she had mostly just described how fanatical I had been without going into details.
Now that I was hearing actual examples from Frederick, I could finally grasp just how had been over Jonathan.

“Not only so, but you were extremely possessive, too. And you had no self–esteem and were always terrified that he’d dump you. But come to think of it, though he always seemed annoyed with you, he never actually thought of splitting up.”
He let out a sigh before continuing, “After you got married, you refused to meet any of your old friends, especially the men. We were college mates, and we had gone through so much together. Even though you rejected me when I confessed to you, we remained friends.
“But then you suddenly cut ties with me. It was only after I graduated that I managed to make my way into Jonathan’s circle, and I could see you once in a while. But even then, you pretended not to know me….
He said a lot, and from it, I was able to instantly piece our relationship together.
As it turned out, Frederick was a college mate that I had met after turning 18, and that was why the current me had no memory of him.
I had gotten to know him sometime after I turned 18, and I had rejected him when he confessed to me. After that, I had met Jonathan, and we had gotten married in a flash.
After marrying Jonathan, I had become a jealous, possessive woman who was mocked by everyone and lost myself entirely in the process. I had even cut off all ties with my friends.
