The noisy chatter of the bar buzzed around me, but all I could see was the anger flashing In Jonathan’s
eyes.
Alicia whispered, “Elise, please don’t misunderstand Jonathan again. There’s really nothing going on between us. My grandma wasn’t feeling well today, so I asked him to come with me to visit her. I felt upset, so I just wanted to drink away the gloom for a bit…”
She added, “Jonathan only stayed because he was worried about my safety…”
Her awkward explanation only seemed to invite more misunderstanding.
I smiled coldly at her. “Fine. Let him keep you company. It’s not like he’s worth much anyway.”
Alicia’s face flushed with anger as she snapped, “How dare you talk about Jonathan like that? I know you’re jealous, but there’s no need to be so mean!”
I twisted my wrist and stared at her with a curious smirk. “Mean? Does it mean to drink late at night with someone else’s husband, or does it mean to point it out?”
Alicia was stunned into silence, just staring at me blankly.
Jonathan’s cold gaze swept over me. “Enough, Elise. Come home with me.”
As if expecting that, I took a step back, dodging his hand.
I said calmly, “Jonathan, we’re getting divorced sooner or later anyway. Let’s just stay out of each other’s way. I’ll pretend I didn’t see you and Alicia, and you pretend you didn’t see me. How about that?”
Jonathan frowned deeply, and his expression turned cold. “That’s impossible,” he said flatly.
Alicia, who was standing beside him, suddenly looked uneasy.
I turned to leave, but Jonathan stepped in front of me, blocking my path like a solid wall.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
I pushed at his chest. “I’m here to have fun. Can’t you see? It’s not every day I come to a bar. I’m going to
enjoy myself.”
Jonathan looked down at me. His eyes were deep and unreadable in the dim light.
After a long silence, he suddenly released my wrist. “Fun, huh? Fine, I’ll play along.”
He grabbed my wrist and dragged me straight onto the dance floor. The crowd was filled with men and women lost in wild pleasure.
Jonathan’s grim expression clashed with the atmosphere. The soft glow of the lights made his sharp features even more striking./
People gathered around, admiring his handsome face.
Hey, handsome, can I get to know you?”
Bold women even reached out to touch him, but his cold glare quickly sent them retreating.
“Get lost!”
I got bored and let go of his hand. “You said you wanted to have fun. Why do you look like you can’t
handle it?”
Jonathan suddenly leaned in closer. “Are you really going to stand here watching other women put their hands all over me?”
Perhaps it was just the lighting, or maybe something in his tone, but I could’ve sworn Jonathan was hissing those words through gritted teeth.
“Forget it. This is pointless…” I muttered, turning away to leave.
Jonathan followed closely behind.
I sat at the bar, and he took the seat right next to me.
Alicia quietly sat on his other side, obediently following him without a word.
After all, she was his ever–loyal childhood friend.
She always put on that fragile, helpless act in front of Jonathan, but with me, she was a completely different person.
I couldn’t help but realize that she really was quite the actress.
“I’ll have a whisky highball,” I said to Frederick.
He frowned. “That’s pretty strong. Pick something else.”
I thought for a second. “You choose for me.”
“How about a Margarita?” he suggested.
I nodded. “Sure.”
My casual, familiar tone with Frederick made Jonathan’s face darken visibly.
Frederick mixed the drink and slid the glass toward me, but Jonathan grabbed it before it could reach me.
“It’s late. No drinking,” he said firmly.
I glared at him. “I’m an adult. Who are you to tell me what to do?”
Jonathan’s dark eyes softened slightly. “Be good. Drinking this late will give you a headache.”
