Chapter 97
I didn’t want to think about it either.
“Even fragments of those memories flashing through my mind hurt so much. I couldn’t even
imagine what a nightmare it would be if I regained all my memories.
1 yanked my hand free from Jonathan’s grip. “Let go!”
At first, he didn’t want to let go.
But I was willing to fall just to break free, and only then did Jonathan loosen his hold a little.
I staggered a step, barely steadying myself, when Frederick immediately grabbed my arm. “Be careful.”
At the same time, Jonathan grabbed my other hand.
As their gazes met, the air grew sharp and heavy, the tension crackling between them.
I had no strength left. Otherwise, I’d have scolded both of them out of frustration, especially Jonathan.
After a while, my knees started to weaken. Frederick loosened his grip slightly, and Jonathan took the chance to sweep me up into his arms, holding me horizontally.
He glanced back at Frederick, and just as I thought their fight wasn’t over, I heard his low voice break the silence.
“You saved her twice.” Jonathan’s voice was icy. I owe you one.”
Frederick’s gaze flickered to my face. “You don’t need to repay that favor. If anyone owes anyone, it’s Elise who owes me.”
Jonathan frowned, and the tension hung heavy again.
I lay on the hospital bed, enduring the occasional sharp pain.
Not long after, Jim came in to examine me.
Jonathan sat by my bedside, and Frederick and Gabrielle followed inside.
Jonathan glanced at them briefly but said nothing.
Back in the day, he probably would’ve kicked them out already.
“What exactly is wrong with her?” Jonathan’s voice carried a sharp urgency, and brooding as ever.
his eyes as dark
Jim frowned. “I told you before, but you didn’t take it seriously. Now you’re finally asking me?
Chapter 97
Jonathan’s gaze immediately darkened, but Jim showed no fear. Instead, he let out a cold snort.
“Didn’t I tell you that Alicia has me looking after her? I told you to check on Elise instead. So, what did you do?”
He sounded like he was grilling Jonathan in front of everyone.
My lashes fluttered lightly as I listened to them. I felt like I was the one pitifully left out.
Jonathan would rather stay by Alicia’s side, who was fine, than come see me even once.
That said, more about how little I mattered to him.
I had thought I’d end up being the joke again like before. But unexpectedly, Jonathan suddenly spoke up, “I didn’t know she’d get hurt.”
Then he lifted his hand and gently tucked the stray hair behind my ear. The gesture was so soft it almost didn’t fit him, and his voice carried an almost imperceptible tenderness.
“If I had known she was hurt, I wouldn’t have left her side for a moment.”
I wasn’t sure who that was meant for. I instinctively turned to the door where Frederick stood, and saw Jonathan’s clenched fist.
I couldn’t help but sneer inwardly.
As expected, men were all the same at their core.
Even if he didn’t care about me or love me, his possessiveness flared up the moment a threat appeared.
Did he really care about me? I didn’t think so.
It was just that Frederick’s presence had made him feel threatened.
I closed my eyes, just about to tell them to leave, when that stabbing pain hit me again without warning.
