REBECCA
By the time we arrived at the cabin, I was both wrecked and happy: wrecked, because the children had both woken up halfway through the trip and, of course, had wanted me to put their favorite songs so they could sing at the top of their lungs, trying to be louder than the speakers, and happy because, in the end, Reiner and I had also joined their challenge – and we had spent a good hour singing – more like screaming – all together.
Thank the Goddess it was just the four of us in the car: none of us had a particular talent for
singing.
We had stopped at a roadside diner so that the kids could have breakfast and Reiner and I
could have a snack (which had magically turned into a cheeseburger – oops), and after an hour or so and one more stop to get some groceries, we were officially on my property.
One of the several reasons I’d waited before buying the house had been that I wanted to
accumulate enough money to be able to also buy the land on which it was built: the old owner
of the cabin, an elderly doctor who had decided to live out his retirement years there until age
took its toll on him, had been ready to sell me the house without the land, because he had
received an offer for it from the Crescent Moon pack, but, as the treasure he was, he had
decided to wait until I had scraped together enough money instead of accepting the immense
sums that that asshole Alpha was offering to him right away.
You and your kids deserve this place, my girl, he’d smiled. And if I must admit it, I’d love to
piss off that pain in the ass of Silas.
So, I had worked and worked and finally bought both house and land: and when I went there
with the kids, shift and ran with them on my back, it felt like being in a pack again.
Above all, I could feel the spirits of my parents next to mine: I was three years old when they died, and my memories of them were fuzzy, but I would never forget the feeling of their fur
between my fingers and the wind in my hair as we walked around the pack lands. Going
around with my kids like that really made me feel connected to them.
Of course, once I realized who I was dealing with on the other side of the property, I’d had the
borders enchanted by a witch: Silas, the Alpha, would have no problem crossing over and
trying to take my land by force – but with a blood–bound barrier, he could not.
“Hands, guys,” I reminded the kids, bringing my right hand back toward Violet as I drove with

only my left.
“Daddy hand!” Jim exclaimed, holding out his own. “Or we won’t get in!”
“Okay…” Reiner commented, startled. “What do you mean, we won’t get in?”
“I’ll tell you later,” I replied hastily.
Once they were all tied to me through Violet, the barrier let us pass
I felt my heart fill with happiness just seeing it.
“Housie!” the kids exclaimed.
“Yes, housie!” I smiled ecstatically.
and there it was.
I parked in front of the entrance: I went to open the door, and as soon as Reiner freed the
puppies from their belts, they ran out of the car and into the house.
I helped Reiner with the backpacks and shopping bags, and finally, we too walked into my little piece of heaven.
“Open the windows, kids,” I told them, since they were perfectly capable of doing so.
The cabin was not particularly big, but perfect for us – equipped with everything we needed and even matching my aesthetic tastes. It was a two–story cabin made almost entirely of wood, entirely surrounded by a patio, and full of floor-to–ceiling windows that let in an endless amount of light at all hours of the day, and that allowed us to admire the nature around us –
which was my favorite feature of the place.
Dr. Levi had lived there for ten years, and had kept it like a jewel, so much so that I had hardly needed to do any renovating or change furniture – I had only had to buy furniture for the children’s room, because he had no children or grandchildren, so he hadn’t had to buy any. The only other thing I had changed was the furniture in the master bedroom, but only because I didn’t like what he had put in there, which I had donated to a local charity.
“No way” Reiner exclaimed: his eyes were so wide with wonder that he was almost comical. He looked exactly like Jim at Christmas – absolutely amazed and unable to choose which new toy to play with first. “This isn’t real“.
“Hmm, yes, I’d say it is” I chuckled. “And they say money doesn’t buy happiness. Hey, you two!” I called the kids as soon as I saw them walk by. “Violet, show Daddy around the house. James, bring yours and Violet’s backpacks upstairs. Dad, when you’re done come help me with the groceries.”
“You got it, Mom,” Reiner chuckled – in that usual tone that, four years ago, was always

followed by a flying kiss.
And although my every instinct pressed for me to turn toward him to receive that kiss, I didn’t.
I knew it would not come.
Once everyone was dispatched to do what they had to do, I turned on the power, water, and heat and began to sort out the groceries. Although we had taken just what we needed for the weekend and something for a few snacks, feeding a family of werewolves meant big spending: Reiner and I, as adult wolves, consumed a lot, and although Violet and James were still small, their Alpha genes were pushing them to eat a lot.
Since the house wasn’t that big, Reiner arrived just in time: we had also taken some canned food, just to have some supplies we could leave there, so he put them in the cupboards I
couldn’t reach.
“This place is absolutely incredible,” he smiled. That smile of his, so sincere, so genuine, so Reiner … my goodness, it made my heart skip a beat.
I nodded, maintaining a relaxed facade. “Yeah – I had a hell of a time getting it, especially against that brute of Silas.”
His jaw hardened, and a flicker of red flashed in his eyes: his wolf did not like what he considered his own being threatened.
“Does he bother you?” he growled quietly, taking a step toward me and into my personal
space.
“No,” I replied. “I mean, he’s always trying to get me to leave because he thinks this land is his, but I’m not planning to change my ways for a little s**t like him. The thing that pisses him off the most is that I paid a witch to have a witch put up protections around the property so that only who I want can enter it … and that explains what happened before. The old owner let him and his pack through – but he didn’t know they were wolves. So when I came in, the dynamics changed a little bit. However, it’s okay, really.”
“I have a certain urge to smash his face in,” Reiner commented.
I flashed my best smile. “Do that in front of the kids and I’ll make you remember how good I am at mopping the floor with
your ass.”
A tempting and mysterious smirk surfaced on his face – a smirk that pleased a certain part of
my body very
much.
“So sure about that?” he asked, his voice low and velvety.

The atmosphere began to heat up, and not only on my part: that light in his eyes, that hunger
… I knew it well.
“LET’S GO!” James shrieked, rushing toward the door at an unrealistic speed… and shattering
that moment like an icy shower.
“WOLFIE WOLFIE WOLFIE!” his sister went after him, though jumping. “MOMMY DADDY
WOLFIE!”
Reiner sighed and shook his head, amused. “As you wish, little despots. The trusty steeds are
coming.”
