Chapter 20
The night before Celeste was discharged from the hospital, Annie couldn’t stop criticizing Damien and Larcian. “The father’s heartless, and the son’s clueless. I called them out once, and they actually stopped visiting altogether…”
Celeste listened to her rant and smiled quietly. Deep down, she knew Annie was only standing up for her. Out of everyone, Annie was the only one who truly had her back.
On the morning of Celeste’s discharge, Annie got an urgent notification about something that needed her immediate attention. She was already gone by 6:00 am and couldn’t help with the discharge paperwork until she had dealt with it,
Celeste waited and waited, but Annie never showed up. She couldn’t leave without someone to handle the discharge process. She didn’t want to call Damien, either.
After hesitating for a while, she finally pulled up the number she’d saved just a few days earlier. Who would’ve thought Adrian’s number would actually come in handy?
When the call connected, his deep voice came through the line. “Who is this?”
“Mr. Wrenford, it’s Celeste.” She paused before adding, “I know this might not be the best thing to ask, but I don’t want to bother Damien. Could you help me with the hospital discharge paperwork?”
Adrian didn’t answer immediately. She had no idea what he was thinking during the silence. She wondered if he was trying to think of a reason to say no, or if he was just too busy.
She started to speak again. “If you’re busy, then-”
“I’ll be there in five minutes.”
He hung up before she could say anything.
Celeste was stunned.
Five minutes? It took that long just to walk from the parking lot to the inpatient unit. Had he already been on his way?
But then again, it made sense. Adrian was the kind of man who took his responsibilities seriously.
She had been injured at the orphanage, and he was one of its donors. If he was coming to help, it was only because she had saved the children.
Celeste quickly changed her clothes and waited for Adrian to arrive. She left the door open on purpose, her eyes darting outside every so often.
When she saw someone at the entrance, she looked up immediately. But the person she spotted was Damien.
She froze.
“What? It’s only been a few days since you last saw me, and you’ve already forgotten I’m your husband? Why are you looking at me like that?” Damien asked, walking toward her with a look of confusion in his eyes.
Celeste frowned. “Why are you here?”
“If Grandpa hadn’t called me first thing this morning and told me to pick you up from the hospital, I wouldn’t have bothered,” he replied, his eyes showing a hint of annoyance.
Only when she heard footsteps did Celeste remember that Adrian was also on his way. Wouldn’t they run into each other in that case?
Given Damien’s nature, he’d definitely demand an explanation, even if he didn’t care about her. Human nature was hard to change.
Both Damien and Celeste turned toward the sound of footsteps.
The moment Adrian appeared in the doorway, Damien’s face filled with disbelief. “Uncle Adrian? What are you doing here?”
