The last time Adrian saw Joyce was about two years ago.
Back then, Eloise was lively, and nothing about her suggested she had autism.
“Her condition didn’t develop overnight.” Celeste’s expression was clouded with sorrow. Her brows knitted together as she continued, “From what I’ve heard, after her mother went to prison, her dad treated her terribly. She was yelled at and beaten up daily.‘
A sharp coldness flickered in Adrian’s eyes. “I knew her husband had a gambling problem, but
I didn’t know he was abusive.”
“I heard from the orphanage director that he often hit Eloise. That poor child has had such a hard life.” She sighed softly.
After hearing her sigh, he turned to look at her profile. He found the way she ached for others so sincere that it touched him deeply.
Celeste sensed his gaze and instinctively turned her head away.
At the same time, Adrian shifted his gaze and looked forward.
“From what I know, Joyce will be executed soon. Are you planning to take care of Eloise in the long term?” he asked seriously.
“Yes! Her father abandoned her long ago, and I adopted her from the orphanage. Once I finalize the divorce and leave the Wrenford family, she’ll legally be my adopted daughter.”
She purposefully emphasized the words “adopted daughter“, which caught Adrian off guard. He had assumed that Celeste was just temporarily looking after Eloise. Instead, she’d taken the step to adopt her.
“I’m sure Damien will look into the child’s identity. I’ve already arranged to keep everything buried, but I can’t promise nothing will leak. If he starts digging, just tell him the child is mine.
Celeste was utterly stunned by his remarks. “Mr. Wrenford, you…‘
She didn’t dare to finish her words.

“If you admit to adopting her now, it’ll only complicate your divorce procedure.” His tone was cool, and his expression unreadable.
“But Damien has been sending people to watch over Avisa Tower. If he starts gging, he’ll know I brought a child home. How am I supposed to explain that?”
“Just tell him that I don’t have time to care for Eloise, so you’re doing it for me.” Adrian’s tone was firm.

Celeste’s eyes widened in surprise. Everything she imagined she’d have to deal with alone, he took on himself. A wave of emotion rose in her chest, intense and all–consuming.
She gazed at him, her eyes full of appreciation. Thank you for helping me again and again, Mr. Wrenford. I honestly don’t know how to repay you.”
Their eyes met, and something unreadable flickered in his gaze. His eyes dropped to her lips, his lashes trembling faintly.
“What’s the matter, Mr. Wrenford?”
Celeste cocked her head with a hint of curiosity in her eyes when she noticed him silently staring at her.
“Don’t drink alcohol again next time.”
With that, Adrian averted his gaze swiftly and didn’t look back.
At the mention of this, her heart skipped a beat. The memory remained vivid in her mind,
refusing to fade away.
